THE ROLE

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development plays a critical role in the advancement of Spirit Rock’s mission. This position is accountable for all development/contributed revenue at Spirit Rock, ensuring we meet our annual and capital revenue goals through annual and major gifts, direct mail, monthly giving and digital fundraising, bequests, and institutional giving and partnerships. The Director of Development works with the Board of Directors, Teachers Council, and committees (Finance, Executive, Governance) to garner support for the fulfillment of Spirit Rock’s mission and programs. The role will include staffing of a Development committee of the Board. This is an exciting opportunity for a fundraising professional to play a key leadership role in sustaining and fueling Spirit Rock’s 5-7-year strategic plan.   

 

In 2023-2024 Spirit Rock will be completing a capital campaign feasibility study and, with the input and recommendation of the Director of Development, will  launch a major 5-year capital campaign.

 

To be successful in this role, you’ll be someone who will feel at home working in an environment that requires you to juggle multiple priorities and competing deadlines while never losing sight of the overarching goals and desired outcomes. The ideal candidate is both a big picture strategic thinker and has the ability to roll up their sleeves to move projects forward, a calm and thoughtful communicator, flexible, and resilient. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and collaborate with the Development Team to create, execute and evaluate Spirit Rock’s comprehensive fundraising programs.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, close and steward strategic individual donor relationships and institutional funding partnerships at the major gift level. 
  • Prepare and partner with organizational leadership or other influencers involved in furthering donor relationships.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and the Board Chair on creating opportunities for meaningful engagement and solicitation of current board members and a portfolio of individuals.
  • Play a role in board relations/cultivation.
  • In collaboration with the Major Gifts Officer, oversee a comprehensive moves management system including identification, research, strategizing, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship for our major annual and capital gifts program.  
  • Maintain and bring innovation and experimentation to the annual fund, monthly giving, and planned giving.
  • Partner with the Development Team to create, implement and manage any stewardship or fundraising events and effectively coordinate development activities with other Spirit Rock departments, such as Programs and Operations.
  • Oversee all external fundraising marketing and campaign materials, including direct mail, brochures, grant proposals, etc.
  • Provide fundraising reports and analysis to the Executive Director, Board, and the Development Committee,
  • Champion and foster an internal culture of philanthropy at Spirit Rock.
  • Supervise the Development Team, or oversee supervisors, in support of our development efforts.  
  • With the Development Manager, create, maintain, and monitor the annual and capital budget and goals for the department.
  • Staff the Development and Governance Committees.

EXPERIENCE

Successful candidates will have 7+ years of experience in non-profit fundraising as well as leadership experience. Additionally, this person will have experience that includes the following:

  • 7+ years of broad fundraising experience in most fundraising vehicles (major gifts, direct mail, planned giving, foundations, special events, and capital campaigns).
  • Ability to successfully engage, cultivate, and steward long-term partnerships that will ensure the philanthropic success of Spirit Rock Meditation Center
  • Capacity for strategic leadership and vision to work with senior leadership on fundraising priorities and to use moves management and metrics to ensure accountability.
  • Experience managing an organization’s communications/marketing as it relates to fundraising, including annual reports, web pages and other organizational messages and publications. 
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint. Experience in Raiser’s Edge/RE NXT or similar donor database preferred.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at Spirit Rock
  • A sensitivity to, and ideally a lived experience in the values and practices of Buddhism and/or the regular practice of Insight (Vipassana) Meditation.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The annual salary range for this role is $130,000 – $150,000. Employees are provided with the following resources, care, and support to do and be the best while serving the Spirit Rock community:
